Obama Vs. Greenhouse Emissions, Government Taking the Lead

Excerpt from: Obama Vs. Greenhouse Emissions, Government Taking the Lead

According to President Obama the federal government is "the largest energy consumer in the United States" but they're cutting down their greenhouse gas emissions by 28 percent by 2020. It's very true that the government has a "responsibility to American citizens to reduce [their] energy use and become more efficient." Obama signed an executive order in October requiring federal agencies to set their goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions within 90 days.

Basically, he is telling people exactly what to do, and giving a reasonable time frame to do it. It's amazing how agencies and any other business will regulate their operations at the cost of the world around us, until they are legally obligated to change their means of "efficient" operation. Obama's goal "is to lower costs, reduce pollution and shift federal energy expenses away from oil and towards local, clean energy."

Google: The Word of the Decade

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 0 comments
Google is the word of the decade! The American Dialect Society has named google - the verb - as its Word of the Decade as stated in the article "Google: The Word of the Decade"by Frederic Lardinois of Read Write Web. Apparently "google" is actually a verb which means "to search the internet". Yes, this means that the word we all thought was just a term is part of our dictionaries. If you didn't know this already, Tweet was actually named the top word of the year for 2009. I honestly didn't think it was used that much, but I guess people just didn't "tweet" much around me. On the other hand, we have the most useful word of 2009, Fail - "a noun or interjection used when something is egregiously unsuccessful". I suppose it's pretty evident why "Fail" was the most used word, remember who was in office up until '09?

A little more information on the American Dialect Society, in case you're wondering why they can make the shots on what word becomes the word of the year, or the word of the decade. It was founded in 1889 and the group consists of linguists, grammarians, etymologists, writers, ediotrs, and university students.

By the way, to represent the 1990s, the ADS picked WEB as the top word of the decade. I just learned about ADS yesterday, but I definitely agree on "Fail" as the most useful word, since "Tweet" is basically "Fail". To me, Twitter is still a website that took Facebook status updates and put it on a website so people can narrate their lives all year long.

The end of the article imposes quite the question on us, and even hints at the cultural dominance of Google. The Author ends with "What do you think? Do you think google deserves to be the one word that represents the last decade? Or is this just another example of how Google is succeeding in its slow takeover of our culture?"

I think that google definitely deserves to be the one word to represent our decade! How many times have you asked someone a question and they replied with a simple phrase "Google it". It has become integrated in our everyday lives, and yes, it also exemplifies how Google is succeeding in their takeover of our culture.

The Google search page changed the way we see our results, Google Maps changed how we look at the world, GMail offered us more space, somewhat unnecessary, but who's going to complain about more space, in our inboxes, Google changed the Internet Marketing industry and helps connect millions of people to the products they enjoy, and although they may be getting heat from China right now, they are preserving thousands of pieces of literature by digital submission. Google will keep on expanding, and I wouldn't doubt it if they made their own operating system or became the new Microsoft.

But I am definitely not complaining, every one of Google's products that I have used have been efficient, user-friendly, and an important factor many of us forget, useful. Google has definitely made an impression on our culture, and definitely deserves to be the word of the decade.

Find Cheap Textbooks for College - Updated With More Resources!

I added a lot of useful information that I left out including what information is actually needed in order to find your cheap textbooks for college. This includes information such as the ISNB number and where to find it, the book title and edition, the author, and the price. I included the price, because I'm sure most people want to compare and see how much they actually saved!

After some comments I received, I also added in a little about Half.com. Half.com is an eBay company that is providing a means by which students and other users can sell their used books so that others can eventually purchase them. It boasts an extremely user-friendly website that anyone can use, and although it may include a lot of the same features as Amazon, it organizes the information in a way which makes it much, much easier to find.

I also came across an interesting tool called BookLookr, but you're going to have to read the article to find out more about that!

i will also be writing an article about the different sites that you can sell your books to that will give you a lot more then what you'll ever see from the university bookstores!

I got the idea for creating this resource for students and parents to find cheap textbooks for college when I noticed that a lot of people were receiving a hell of a lot less than what they paid for during textbook buyback days. The Baskimo: The Family Dog

I was looking through the assignment desk of Associated Content and they needed someone to write a dog profile on the Baskimo. The Baskimo is a relatively unknown dog hybrid between the American Eskimo and the Basset Hound. When writing this article I learned a little about a new dog in existence, and it was interesting considering I have a little Yorkie of my own. Because the Baskimo is a hybrid the dog receives some very nice qualities from both its parents, considering it is a purebred cross-breed. The qualities make it a very interesting companion and make it an exceptional dog for any family that has children.

"When we first hear the word "hybrid", we usually think hybrid cars, cars designed for fuel-efficiency by mixing two or more power sources. Similarly, Dog breeders are cross-breeding to get a combination of any of the characteristics found in either of the breeds. These include the temperament of dog, coloring of their coats, and of course size. The Baskimo is a hybrid dog, a dog that is not a purebred. It is a cross between the American Eskimo and the Basset Hound, and as you guessed, the name of the dog is a mix of both. However, with all hybrids, some Baskimo are not first generation hybrids. This means that there can be inconsistencies between one Baskimo and another, so it is not always easy to predict what it may look like. Although this may be true, there are many characteristics very common among Baskimo dogs."
